0 (No Pain) = BAR, dream sleep, grooming, normal mobility
 
1 (Probably no pain) = appears normal, incr. HR
 
2 (Mild Discomfort) = limp, eat and sleep, may resist palpation
 
3 (Mild pain or Discomfort) = limps, tense abdomen, depressed, restless, shaking, incr. HR/RR
 
4 (Mild to Mod. Pain) = resists touch, abnormal body position, shallow RR, crying occ.
 
5 (Moderate Pain) = depressed, no appetite, cry or bite, splinting or prayer position, won?t sleep
 
6 (Moderate Pain) = may cry or whine frequently without being touched, may still purr and wag tail
 
7 (Mod to Severe) = very depressed, will cry when moved, will urinate and  defecate w/o moving
 
8 (Severe) = vocalizing, depressed, unaware of surroundings, incr. RR with abdominal effort
 
9 (Severe to Excruciating) = hyperesthetic, trembles involuntarily, can cause death
 
10 (Excruciating) = Screaming or almost comatose, hyperesthetic, painful anywhere you touch, can cause death
